Where do you fall on the Courage versus Humanness scale? ⚖️

Let me break it down for you…

Humanness is about the ‘human’ factor: empathy, kindness, consideration, aka ‘compassionateness’ or the ‘humane orientation’ in research (House et al., 2002; Seco & Lopez, 2014).

The Courage-factor is about being assertive and standing up for yourself and for what’s right.

You need to balance both. ⚖️

By striking the right balance between Humanness and Courage, you’ll create healthy and productive relationship at work (and at home!).

P.S. Where do you fall on the courage vs humanness scale? (I’m definitely naturally higher on warmth, but I’ve been on a journey to elevate my courage factor).

📖 This model first appeared as the ‘Compassion-Assertiveness Matrix in the context of Leader Trust:
•Seco, V. M. M., & Lopes, M. P. (2014). Between compassionateness and assertiveness: A trust matrix for leaders. Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management (JIEM), 7(3), 622-644.

Various authors & thought leaders have shared versions of similar models, including Simon Sinek and Kim Scott, who’ve applied the matrix to their own approaches to leadership, management, and communication.

Similar dimensions are explored in cross-cultural GLOBE Project studies, incl. from Brodbeck & colleagues (2002), Schlösser & colleagues, and another paper from House & colleagues (2002). Understanding cultures & implicit leadership theories… Journal of World Business, 37(1), 3-10.

where we have teams or people who are really high on humanists and really low encourage we often get people who have very much people pleasers they seek the validation and approval of others they are afraid of conflict because then they take it personally where we have people who are really high on courage and very low on humanness we get agitators they're very confident very competent but they lack connection in fact i once worked with a senior leader he had to hire a compassion consultant because he was very high on courage and didn't even understand the humanist i mentioned now when
we have very low humanists very low courage this is where we get apathy and toxicity in teams passive aggression gossip throwing other people under the bus apathy self protection and then this is where we want to be high humanness high courage
we feel like people are our partners the relationship is founded on trust they give feedback they can be courageous but they balance it with warmth we want to enjoy going to work but we want to be told how we can get better really important that we get this balance right
