an f b i agent and private investigator i practice and teach proper techniques in mobile surveillance but the dirty little secret is that the vast majority of people don't pay attention to their surroundings enough to know which car is behind them at any point in time here's an example years ago i was following a corrections officer who was smuggling drugs to inmates in exchange for bribes this prison guard was a bodybuilder who was at gold's gym every day at ten am working out so i went to the gym and waited for him to finish his workout so i could begin the surveillance to follow him to a drug deal we knew was going to occur well my fbi car was a complete jalopy and the battery died while i was waiting
i put up my hood in the parking lot and waited for a jumpstart to arrive and who walks out of the gym but the subject of my investigation he walks right over to my car and says what's the problem i tell him i'm waiting for a jumpstart he says let me get my truck i'll jump started for you he drives over to me pops his hood and jumpstarts my car he did this for a perfect stranger my heartbeat was racing but what could i do i shook his hand i thanked him profusely he got in his truck i got in my car and i followed him to the drug deal that was filmed and recorded he never saw me following him and then a week later when i was in his house at the search warrant interacting with him he had no recollection of ever meeting me if you conduct surveillance is be careful be smart but also be forgiving of yourself if you make mistakes odds are no one noticed have a great day and be cool
