But what are they?

It is a unit used to measure the power of an engine.

As a simple rule, the more horsepower a car has, the faster it can go in a straight line.

Torque is the twisting force produced by an engine. You can think of it as strength.

Horsepower shows how quickly an engine exerts that strength.

So, horsepower sets the top speed, and torque gives it the oomph to get there.
